A Market with a Monumental Past
Completed in 1937 during the French colonial era, Central Market was once the largest market in Southeast Asia. Its bold Art Deco design domed center with four wide wings—still stands out today. The structure was engineered to keep the market cool and airy, even on Phnom Penh’s hottest days.
Locals still call it Phsar Thmei, meaning “New Market,” even though it’s nearly a century old. After a major renovation in 2011, the building was restored to its original elegance, with high yellow walls and elegant Khmer-French features.
What You’ll Find Inside
The market is divided into sections, each offering a different kind of treasure:
Central dome: Glittering gold jewelry, gemstones, watches, and timepieces
Side wings: Souvenirs, t-shirts, handbags, toys, and traditional crafts
Outer areas: Fresh produce, electronics, cosmetics, and household goods
Food stalls: Local snacks like fried spring rolls, iced coffee, and sticky rice
You’ll hear bargaining in Khmer, French, and English. Some prices are fixed, but haggling is still part of the fun in many sections. Just remember to smile and be polite Cambodian vendors are friendly and helpful.
More Than Shopping: Local Vibes
Even if you’re not in the mood to buy, Central Market is worth a visit for its energy alone. It’s a window into Phnom Penh daily life, where shoppers mix with tourists and students grab snacks between classes. Just outside the market, cafés and juice stands make for a perfect people-watching perch.
